Rinku Rajguru’s performance is indeed commendable, her stance is as powerful for the movie as the music. I won’t spoil it for you! But you exit the hall broken and enraged. The movie meanders ahead beautifully as Manjule makes you appreciate the small things of an independent livelihood.Īnd just when you think, ‘OK. This only makes you believe that the teenage “love”, which otherwise would have been just infatuation, has flourished. Tested by time and circumstances, their love only grows. The second half captures the intricate life of Parshya and Archie in an unknown big city. The crude, rural Marathi dialogues are not so easy to comprehend but subtitles help, though the translation is so strict, you’ll now know the meaning of every slang and abuse literally by the end of the movie. The first half of Sairat is a pacy, delightful watch, thanks to Manjule’s eyepiece capturing the feeling of “being-in-love” in slow-motion songs, beautifully composed by Ajay-Atul, ornamented by a British Symphony orchestra. Their love starts from the well of the village, moves through their high-school to the fields outside the village and finally takes a wild path hounded by social divide, communal hatred and destruction. It is a love story of Prashant Kale aka Parshya (Akash Thosar), the cricket champ of the village and son of a peasant, and Archana Patil aka Archie (Rinku Rajguru), the bold, free-willed, Bullet-riding daughter of the Patil of the village, the kingpin of local politics. So this “original fiction” drama set in rural Maharashtra is special. But then, not every day you have a Marathi movie catching the attention of the country, or running for over three weeks in a Delhi multiplex with subtitles, amid popular big-budget releases like The Jungle Book, Civil War, Baaghi, Sarbjit and The Man who knew Infinity, the last two again being biopics. You may question my repeated comparison of Sairat with Bollywood films.

Two people from the extremes of the society fall in love, and their worlds disagree and pounce on them with guns of judgement and cannons of abuse.īut the director Nagraj Popatrao Manjule stands a class apart in the art of storytelling, something that Hindi cinema has lacked of late, as adaptations like Main aur Charles (based on the life of conman and serial killer Charles Sobhraj) and Azhar (on former Indian cricket captain Mohd Azharuddin) are bombing at the box office. It restores faith in cinema, which essentially is a creative art of visual storytelling first. At a time when the mainstream Bollywood is thriving on biopics due to lack of good and original scripts, a movie like Sairat is a saviour.
